DIY : Mason Jar Drop Lights

I've been eyeing the Edison style drop lights for a while now, and today I decided it was time I brought the style into our apartment. The project was actually pretty easy, and I'm really happy with the outcome.

1. Edison bulb; These can be found at Anthropologie, but I found this one for about half the price at Butter Home , in the Melrose Market.
2. Cord kit; I bought this one on sale a while ago at UO, but they have them everywhere, including Ikea.
3. Vintage mason jar; I found this particular one at the Seattle Trading Post.
4. Cordless Drill (my baby)
5. Pliers
6. Hammer

1. Drill holes as close together to one another as possible, around a traced circle.
2. Hammer the middle to pop out the center, and use the pliers to bend jagged edges.
3. Attach the cord by unscrewing the plastic top and sliding the lid one. Re-screw onto other side of the lid.
Lastly, put it all together! Add the bulb, put the lid on the jar, and presto, you have a DIY mason jar drop light!

A Different Sort of Before and After

As many of you know, there are few things that drive me more insane than bad design, and especially typography. I have a hate so deep for Comic Sans, it's borderline dangerous. That said I'm starting a new genre of post, When Design Attacks. Because sometimes bad design just has to be dealt with. It's not that this is a particularly bad one, as the bad ones go, but I walk past this sign in the lobby of my apartment building everyday, and today I decided to do something about. That and I was looking for any excuse not to work out.

Life on the Hill Tastes Good: La Bete

To celebrate "cuarto anos" yesterday, Will took me to La Bete, on the hill. It was amazing to say the least, with an awesome happy hour, and drool worthy burger. Also on the menu? About ever cute little animal you would ever want to devour, as well as pork rinds (below, right) and grilled dates. If you're looking for a nice place for dinner, and a meal to share (with appetizers of course) I would highly recommend it. We will be back....

Sonoma Style

I got home from our Sonoma getaway a few hours ago and have already started editing pictures. I was really excited to shoot down there, I was only disappointed with the lack of grapes, as nothing is blooming yet. That aside, I still got some pretty nice shots, and I'm happy with them.

So what did we do down there? We ate. We drank. We roamed around vineyards and organic gardens, and sat in hot tubs. Yup, it was pretty rough.

Bathroom Break

Will and I spent an unfortunate amount of time in the bathroom this week, but here's something to perk any post-flu-bathroom-hater up... beautiful bathrooms!

1. Design*Sponge, I'm a sucker for a chalkboard wall
2. Apartment Therapy, Black and white is a pretty bold choice for a bathroom, but I'm diggin' it
3. Apartment Therapy, Exposed brick and beams, awesome tub and large windows... yes please!
4. Apartment Therapy, Good luck getting me out of here.
5. Dwell, I've always wanted a outdoor shower, but an outdoor bath? I would be in heaven.

Design Love: Color Studies

I've been doing a lot of playing with color at work lately, and it's sparked a new segment of Design Love; Color Studies. Weather you're decorating a living room, or branding an apartment complex, it's nice to have some color ideas. Every once in a while we all need a little inspiration, and hopefully this will spark some for you.

Design Love : Calendars

Not sure what sparked this today, but I thought I would post!

Dan's Birthday

Life on the hill tastes good: Taco Tuesday!

Ladies and gentlemen, and I have discovered a gem. It's an old concept with a delicious simple twist; it's cheap and actually delicious. Now we can all think of a local bar with taco tuesday/thursday (Wild Rose... Ravenna Ale House...) but we also can unfortunately think of the tacos, with ground hamburger meat and bland salsa. Well, Licorice has changed all that, and is putting the cold-beef-dive-bar-taco to shame. On Tuesday nights you can get $1 tacos at Licorice all night, until they run out! And... happy hour drinks until 7! It may be because I had two of these deliciously strong cocktails, it may be because I had 6 tacos (yup, 6) but I'm f-ing stoked. The only down side I can possibly think of (and frankly I don't personally give a shit about) is they only have one choice in taco and that is pork. And the only reason that is a slight problem is I know a few happy hour enthusiast who are vegetarian. But ladies, let me tell you, if there was ever a time to start eating pork... Or you can just drink incredibly strong and cheap cocktails and munch on pretzels and nuts, either way.

So, if you're on the hill after work on a Tuesday and looking for come cheap eats, Licorice is the place to go. I highly recommend it!

Ya, it's a terrible cell phone pic, but you get the idea
